Sports news for Screven County and surrounding areas.

This and that in real world time

Picture day came and went last Thursday (always to the relief of football coaches), the first day of work for teachers finally arrived yesterday (Sonny, where’s the $ -- too many bass ponds?), the first day of school for students is Monday (no furloughs for them) and the first day for full contact football drills comes on Tuesday (players say finally, or do they?).

SCHS rewarded for sportsmanship

Screven County not only has some talented student-athletes, but the county also has some youth who display sportsmanship on their batttle fields.
Screven County High School was one of the schools to be honored by the Georgia High School Association and Georgia Electric Membership Corporation.
SCHS was one of the 40 GHSA-member high schools to receive the 2009 GEMC Cooperative Spirit Sportsmanship Award honoring exemplary sportsmanship demonstrated during the 2008-09 school year.

Gridiron Gamecocks complete spring drills

With a spirited scrimmage last Tuesday the SCHS gridiron Gamecocks of Coach Pat Collins concluded their spring football drills. The spring began with rising seventh and eighth graders journeying to the high school for drills with the varsity staff and concluded with a look at the potential 2008 varsity and a sneak peak at possible new wrinkles in the Wing-T offense.
“We had a great spring,” said Collins. “We were able to identify some new players and where they can best fit next season. A good summer is very important for our endeavors in the fall.”

SCHS stands 13th in GADA Directors Cup standings

With only the baseball state title left to decide, the SCHS Gamecock athletic programs ranks 13th in the state among the 74 Class AA schools in the ranking for the Georgia Athletic Directors Association Directors Cup standings. With two of the four teams in this week’s Final Four already ahead of SCHS and the other two so far behind that they cannot catch SCHS, the standing for the locals will not change with the baseball outcome.

Diamond Gamecocks fall to Jeff Davis, finish 20-8

Twice seeing sixth inning leads evaporate, the SCHS baseball Gamecocks of Billy Pollock fell to visiting Jeff Davis 11-7 and 5-4 in the round of 16 of the GHSA Class AA state playoffs last Wednesday.
While the Roosters find their season done with a Region 3AA championship and a 20-8 record, the Region 2AA third seeded Yellow Jackets (20-10) headed to the quarterfinals and a visit to Atlanta to face The Lovett School this past Tuesday.

Greater Atlanta ousts Lady Gamecock netters

Despite playing some of their best tennis of the year, the SCHS Lady Gamecocks of Diane Freeman once again proved the difference between great South Georgia public school tennis and great metro-Atlanta private school tennis as they fell to Greater Atlanta Christian 3-0 in the state semifinals at the Clayton County International Tennis Center Saturday morning.

Roberts claims pair of state championships

For the second time in three years a member of the SCHS Gamecock track team has brought home a pair of state championship medals.  This time however, that team member, in junior Cornelius Roberts, has also brought with him a silver medal as well.  Additionally the Gamecock 4X100 relay team netted a bronze on Saturday morning while Tevin Robbins picked up a fourth in the discus.

Diamond Gamecocks advance into Sweet 16

On a Friday afternoon/evening/night when runs were put on the scoreboard in an amazingly regular fashion the Screven County baseball Gamecocks of Billy Pollock swept the visiting Central Macon Chargers 10-1 and 24-12 in the first round of the GHSA Class AA state playoffs.
The win sent the Region 3AA champion, seventh ranked, Red and White to 20-6 on the season; marking just the fourth time in baseball history (1999-2001) the program has achieved that plateau.

SCHS girls track can’t catch up with region champs Lady Royals

Despite sending eight team members to state and setting six individual and team school records, the SCHS Lady Gamecock track team could not get past the home-standing Bleckley County Lady Royals in the two-day Region 3AA track meet last week.

BCHS finished with an amazing 151 points, while runner-up SCHS had 135.
