Youthful Gamecocks’ rough season continues
The youthful basketball Gamecocks of Brent Anderson saw their rough season continue last week with road losses to Effingham County and Jenkins County.
Both were return engagements from earlier contests in the Harold Lee Scott Gymnasium.
Standing at 1-6 on a season as young as they, the Roosters were at Jefferson County Tuesday for their 3AA-A lidlifter and will travel to Metter Friday, Dec. 16, for a rematch with the Tigers.
At that point, the team will have better than two weeks to practice before they resume play Jan. 3 when the Bears of Burke County come to town.
Both Effingham and Jenkins County proved rude hosts last week, especially the nearby Eagles who kept some of their starters in long after the outcome was decided.
With the game at 56-28 after three, a pair of starters scored 15 points between them in the final stanza. The final was 83-35.
No Rooster scored in double figures. Jemelle Lanier led the effort with nine points. Antone Bunbury had eight rebounds and Rashad Hughley had seven.
On Dec. 10, the Red and White hung valiantly with the big and powerful Effingham Rebels, trailing 39-32 at intermission.
“Scared straight” the Rebels exploded for 30 third quarter points to end the suspense.
In contrast to Jenkins County four days later, ECHS played none of its starters in the final period of their 84-59 win.
Lanier had 25 for the Gamecocks and Darius Wright 14. Lanier’s point total included six treys. Lanier also led on the boards with nine.
