Wrestlers prepare for traditional area tourney

First Byline:
Burton Kemp Jr.

Completing their busiest week of the season, the SCHS Gamecock wrestlers of Caleb White took to the mats against four teams last week before concluding with a participation in the Vidalia Sweet Onion Tournament over the weekend.
The team will conclude the season this weekend, beginning Friday, with the 3AA Area Dual Tournament in Lyons at the Toombs County Middle School Gym.
In an extremely hectic week, the Roosters went to Burke County Jan. 26 to take on the host Bears and the Lakeside-Evans Panthers as well as the Greenbrier Wolf Pack, all much larger schools. SCHS did come away with a victory over the Pack.  Thursday the 28th saw the team go to Marlow for a single dual match with South Effingham. All of this in preparation for the trip to Vidalia.
The win over Greenbrier saw pins recorded by Trevez Jones (125), Corey Waters (130), Joseph Gray (135), John Boykin (161), and Joe Brown (215).  Other wins went to Terrell Roberts (145) 20-2 and Corey Taylor (152) by forfeit.
In the losses to Burke and Lakeside-Evans, Jones picked up a 6-3 win over Lakeside; Waters a pin over Burke and a 17-1 decision over a Lakeside opponent; Gray a forfeit over Lakeside; Roberts pins over both; and Boykin a pin over Burke.
South Effingham proved rude hosts, losing only four matches to the visiting Gamecocks. Jones by pin; Gray by 8-5; Cameron Martin (171) by pin; and Justin Jackson (285) by forfeit were the SCHS winners.  No results were available from the Vidalia Tournament.
