Lonon logs rare triple-double

First Byline:
Burton Kemp Jr.

Using a third quarter offensive outburst, the SCHS Lady Gamecocks overcame the visiting Dublin Lady Irish by a 63-44 margin Saturday night to complete a two-game weekend sweep of 3AA opponents.
Combined with their 55-34 win over Southeast Bulloch Friday night, the Red and White now stand at 10-10 with two regular season contests remaining.
Dodge County will host the team at 6 p.m. Friday in the season’s final 3AA crossover contest, while Portal will be at the Harold Lee Scott Gymnasium Saturday for senior night and the season finale.
Play in the Region 3AA tournament begins at Brewton Parker College Tuesday, Feb. 17, when SCHS, the No. 4 seed from the A subregion will face either Toombs County or Dublin from 3AA-B. The winner of that will face B subregion champion Vidalia Feb. 18.
While Friday’s win over SEB left Roy Cooper’s team with a 3-5 final record against 3AA-A, the Saturday win over Dublin gives the team a 4-1 record against 3AA-B with the Dodge contest remaining.
With a 12-7 lead after one quarter against the Lady Irish, the locals fell behind on the strength of four treys by the visitors. After trailing for almost the entire quarter, Bria Lonon’s pair from the charity stripe knotted the game at 24 with 1.9 seconds left in the half.  When Dublin scored the first point of the second half, the Irish had their last hurrah at 27-26.
SCHS then ran off 13 consecutive points, eventually outscoring Dublin 23-6 in the quarter. The lead reached 20 several times in the final stanza.
Lonon had the biggest night of her career with a triple double that included 28 points, 13 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. Courtney Burns claimed 11 to go with seven rebounds, while Casmeyona Austin threw in 10. Kaala White had 10 rebounds and Yana Felton 11 assists. The team was 15-18 from the line on the night.
It was Austin who drilled a three with 7:40 still on the first quarter clock against the visiting SEB Lady Jackets and the Lady Gamecocks never trailed. While the junior went on to hit another trey with just 28 seconds left in the quarter, Austin’s six combined with fellow-junior backcourt mate Yana Felton’s eight helped the Red and White race to an 18-5 lead after one and never feel threatened.
While SEB did close the gap to less then 10 at the 6:10 mark of the second after opening the stanza with four straight points, the Lady Gamecocks quickly went on a 7-0 run and their lead never again dropped below 10. In fact it never dropped below 14 in the 55-34 win.
Leading the way was Austin’s 16, Lonon’s 13 and Felton’s 12. Lonon pulled down another 17 rebounds, while Burns had nine. Felton had six assists and Austin six steals.
