Lady Gamecocks hoops split final weekend’s games

First Byline:
Burton Kemp Jr.

On the heels of a disappointing trip to Eastman, the youthful SCHS Lady Gamecocks of Roy Cooper finished out their regular season at 11-11 with a resounding 50-25 victory over Portal’s Lady Panthers in the Harold Lee Scott Gymnasium Saturday night.
The team next will be in action Feb. 17 at the Brewton Parker College Gym in the opening round of the 3AA Tournament.
With seniors Jasmine McCoy and Remona Spaulding honored in post-game ceremonies, the Red and White coasted to a 17-2 first quarter lead and watched Cooper rotate players in droves afterwards. That trend-setting first quarter saw Casmeyona Austin hit a pair of threes and Courtney Roberts one. Yana Felton, Courtney Burns (2) and Bria Lonon had two-point baskets.
Before the night was over, Lonon had another double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, while Felton also had 12 points to go with nine assists. Burns added eight points and seven rebounds. Austin finished with nine points and McCoy pulled down six rebounds.
Given a chance to roll through the B-side of Region 3AA, the Lady Gamecocks fell behind homestanding Dodge County 15-4 in the first quarter and never truly got back into the game. They did cut the lead to 34-26 after three quarters, but the threat was never truly serious in the 52-36 loss.
The Lady Gamecocks entered the contest with a 4-1 record against the other side, their lone loss a bad one to B-leading Vidalia. Meanwhile, the record finished at only 3-5 on the A-side. The five of six did not happen.
Lonon was the board leader with 11 and point leader with 18. Felton hit for six. Lonon also had five blocks, while Austin had five steals.
