Junior Boys claim state title

Without a blemish on their record, the Screven County Junior Boys rolled to a state championship in Baxley Saturday.
“They played well as a team,” said coach Bob Hodges. “We want to thank everyone for all the support.”
The 14-year-old and under boys defeated Appling County 8-0 in five innings for the title. That was the same Appling squad that came through the losers’ bracket after Screven County defeated them in the first state tournament game 6-5.
In Game Two, Screven County defeated Miller County 9-2 and then Morgan County 10-5.
The juniors did not lose a game in state, district or Statesboro Firecracker Invitational play.
This team is composed of many of the players who were part of the state winners as 10-year-old mites, and state runners-up as midgets.
At the plate, the team had an overall batting average of .357. Leading the way individually were Bailey Pollock, Caleb Krulic and James Woods, who each had a .500 batting average. Dawson Oglesby had two home runs during the tourney, while Brandon Whatley had one dinger.
The four Screven County pitchers during the tournament complied 46 strikeouts and only gave up 11 walks.
Alan Tapley had two complete-game wins on the mound at state. Tapley struck out 23 opposing batters, while allowing just three base on balls.
