Girls hoops improve to 5-4 with road win

First Byline:
Burton Kemp Jr.

Highlighted by a 39-38 win over the home-standing Effingham County Lady Rebels Dec. 6, the SCHS Lady Gamecocks of Roy Cooper won their third consecutive game in Millen Saturday to improve to 5-4 on the season.
A crucial subregion game at Jefferson County two days ago, the team will play its last game of 2011 Friday night as they face winless Metter in Metter.
The team will next be in action in the first of back-to-back games with AAA Burke County Jan. 3 at the Harold Lee Scott Gymnasium.
Having missed an opportunity to score a come-from-behind victory over the Lady Rebels of Effingham County on the SCHS home court Nov. 26, the Red and White jumped to an early lead and survived a late comeback attempt by ECHS in Springfield.
Sophomore Destiny Brewton hit the only of her fourth quarter free throws with just 12 ticks remaining on the fourth quarter clock to give the Lady Gamecocks their win.
Senior Courtney Burns scored at least four points in every quarter, including a 7-for-9 performance from the charity stripe to lead the way with 17 points. Brewton finished with 10 as did junior Courtney Burns.
Saturday night in Millen, unlike their previous encounter in Sylvania, the Lady Gamecocks did not let the Lady Eagles ever make a game of the contest.
Jumping to a 16-4 lead after eight minutes, there was never any doubt of the outcome. Brewton had six in the first quarter, while Roberts and Juwanika Herron had four each.
While Cooper emptied his bench, Roberts finished with 12; Burns 11; and Brewton eight.
