Jerry Seinfeld did a TV show about nothing. As I begin this, is it possible to do a column about nothing? Maybe so, maybe not.
I could not come up with anything specific, so let’s just ramble for a while. In no particular order, here are some things relevant to Screven County High School athletics and some things not …
Relevant to SCHS -- Maybe lost in the shuffle of some big numbers put up by members of the Gamecock basketball team is Lady Gamecock Bria Lonon. On Saturday night, Lonon did something never done by a Gamecock or Lady Gamecock. If it has been done, it has not been recorded.
Lonon accomplished a triple double.
Consistently with double doubles (double figures in both scoring and rebounding), Lonon broke the previous record for blocked shots in a game (eight) by rejecting 10 Lady Irish shots on Saturday night. Combined with 28 points and 13 rebounds, that becomes a triple double.
Not all of the blocks were of the “in your face” variety which, no matter how far ahead or behind our team is, ignite the crowd. All, however, accomplished the same thing. Lonon even rebounded one of her blocked shots.
It was obvious from the outset that Lonon was going to dominate Dublin in the paint. Jim Randall Doyle and I, sitting nearly under the Dublin basket, did not start “unofficially” counting blocks until the first quarter was almost over. We got up to eight or nine with us coming late to the count. She may have had more than the official count of 10.
Quietly, she will finish the season with better than 800 career points. With every major player on a now 10-10 team returning for another stint next winter, look for big things (have I now put the proverbial monkey on their back?) from the 2010-2011 team.
Semi-related to SCHS -- Former SCHS Gamecock basketball star and Screven County Athletic Hall of Fame member Jesse Watkins has a new title. He is general manager and coach of the Evansville (Ind.) Swish of the brand new Midwest Basketball League which is set to begin play in April and run through June. Go to www.mwbasketballleague.com for more information.
Jesse has been a very successful coach at the collegiate level for many, many years. More than 20 years ago Watkins was a big cog in the wheel of the most successful Gamecock basketball team in history -- the 1988-89 region champions. It is still the only championship for our boys ever. Do I say that too much?
Not related at all to SCHS -- Have you ever tried to figure out what time it is in Melbourne, Australia? Have you ever tried to figure out what time it is here when down there they are 16 hours ahead of us? Well it happens every year at this time when the Australian Open (tennis if you don’t keep up) comes and goes.
When they play the French Open, the play is only six hours ahead of us. When they play at Wimbledon, the play is only five hours ahead of us. Not so hard to handle.
Anyway, when they take place, I always try to take in the Grand Slam events (on TV of course), but when the championships are live from Melbourne at 3:30 a.m. on ESPN, kind of tough.
So when is the replay? The Serena Williams v. Justin Henin championship began sometime very, very early Saturday morning and was over well before I arose after a night of enjoying a Gamecock cage sweep over Southeast Bulloch. It was big news on most browser pages. When was it on The Deuce? It was on at 10 o’clock Saturday night. A genuine 16 hours after it ended.
The Roger Federer v. Andy Murray championship did replay at 10 a.m. Sunday morning.
Oh yeah, when Maria Sharapova lost to Maria Kirkilenko in the first round, that was live.
There it is. A column about nothing. If you are reading this, that means you made it through.
