Lady Gamecock tennis sweeps opening doubleheader
The Screven County High School tennis program got a jump on virtually everyone in the state on Saturday as they traveled to Springfield to log a doubleheader with AAAAAA Effingham County and AAAAA Wayne County.
The Lady Gamecocks took the measure of both teams by 3-2 margins, while the Gamecocks fell 4-1 and 3-2 to ECHS and WCHS, respectively.
Next on the schedule is a Feb. 20 match in Sylvania with Burke County.
As for their opponents on the frigid Saturday encounters, both teams from both schools were playoff participants a year ago as Wayne County was 2AAAAA runner in both boys and girls with the girls going to the second round while both Effingham teams were 2AAAAAA third seeds with each team going to the second round.
WCHS and SCHS did not meet last season while both Gamecock teams claimed 4-1 wins over ECHS on Feb. 21 with the boys picking up a second win 3-2 over the Rebels in the Coastal Empire Tennis Classic on March 24.
The Lady Gamecocks had tough matches with both, managing to get wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles added with a doubles win, once at two and once at one.
In their opener against Effingham, wins came from Kate Bazemore 6-3, 6-1; Ansley Dirst 6-0, 6-2; and the team of Caitlyn Thomas/Alana Milner 6-4, 6-2. Losses went to Pamela Dixon 5-7, 4-6 and Ansley Thompson/Sarah Sowell 5-7, 2-6.
Their second match saw a slightly different lineup but the same score with wins going to Bazemore 6-2, 6-2, and Dirst 6-2, 6-2 though the two switched positions in the lineup.
Against Wayne the team of Thompson/Sowell also came up with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Dixon fell in a tough 2-6, 6-7(5) match, while the team of Caitlyn Thomas/Madison Thomas lost 5-7, 3-6.
For the boys, the opening outcome could easily have been different, but they were unable to come up with enough big plays at two spots.
The 4-1 loss to the Rebels saw three third sets (played as 10-point tiebreakers) with the Red and White losing two of them.
The lone win came from Logan Boswell, who won his third set at No. 3 by 3-6, 6-3, 11-9.
Falling in third sets were Bradley Martin at one 6-2, 1-6, 5-10 and the team of Scott Williamson/Jentson Collins 2-6, 6-3, 8-10. Also losing were Gage Reynolds 2-6, 3-6 and Caleb Collins/Bradley Garland 3-6, 4-6.
In the loss to Wayne County, there were no pivotal matches as all wins both ways were straight sets that were not necessarily close. Winning were Jentson Collins at No. 3 by a 6-4, 6-0 score and the team of Reynolds/Boswell 6-2, 6-2.
Falling were Martin 1-6, 1-6, Williamson 0-6, 4-6, and Caleb Collins/ Garland 3-6, 3-6.
