Lady Gamecocks can’t follow up win
After ending their long losing streak on Dec. 27 at the expense of visiting Portal, the SCHS Lady Gamecocks of Stephanie Davis were unable to capitalize on that success as they have now fallen in four consecutive Region 4AA games.
Unfortunately, the schedule continues to be busy as undefeated and fourth-ranked Laney will host SCHS Friday night before the team takes a break from their 4AA schedule for a return engagement with Long County on Saturday, this one in Ludowici. Jan. 16 will have the team in Portal. The still winless on the season Lady Panthers will be lying in wait for the Red and White.
Tuesday night the 1-9 Glenn Hills Lady Spartans presented SCHS with a chance to pick up another victory.
GHHS owns a 47-22 loss to Harlem to whom SCHS fell by three.
Amid a flurry of turnovers from start to finish -- many just throwing the ball to the Blue and White instead of Red and White -- the Lady Gamecocks fell 39-27 in a winnable game.
After falling behind 9-1 after one, the team came roaring back to trail but 16-13 at intermission.
When Skyla Rentz hit a basket 20 seconds into the third quarter suddenly the SCHS deficit was just one at 16-15.
Later a Patrice Roberts trey moved the score to 20-18 the way of the visitors. It took SCHS better than three minutes to score again and that was on a free throw by Precious Anderson that made the score 28-18. Madison Lewis had 11 points.
Other region losses came to Jefferson County 62-26 on Jan. 6; 41-26 to Westside on Jan. 5; and 82-17 to Butler on Jan. 2. Butler showed little class as their starters scored all but two of the team’s 11 fourth quarter points and they were pressing for most of the final stanza as well.
