Cheerleaders claim Region 4AA title
Better than doubling their only opposition the SCHS Lady Gamecock cheerleaders of Mary Helen Harrison and Vette Rountree easily outclassed the Jefferson County Lady Warriors 84.16 to 41.16 in the Region 4AA competition at Putnam County High School in Eatonton Saturday.
The Red and White will now compete in the Class AA state finals in Columbus this Saturday, Nov. 11.
Saturday finals begin at 9 a.m. in the Columbus Civic Center. There will be 24 routines performed and then a 15-minute break. The Lady Gamecocks are the 25th squad to perform and will be the first after the morning break. Tickets are $12 per session and there are two sessions per day, but SCHS will participate only in the Saturday morning session.
Whereas a year ago the Lady Gamecocks claimed their region title with no opposition on their way to a fifth-place state finish both Jefferson County and T.W. Josey committed to a competitive cheer squad for this year. Only Jeffco lived up to the commitment.
In every area, SCHS topped JCHS.
With very little to push them in Eatonton, Rountree said, “I thought the girls did pretty well this weekend. We actually let two girls who are working to increase their tumbling add to their routine on Saturday hoping that they would land and help us earn more points in the degree of difficulty of our routine. Both threw their tumbling and both resulted in falls which were two points each. For region, we were able to absorb the four points in deductions, but for the State Competition, this upcoming Saturday we will not be able to.”
Despite the falls, especially impressive for the Red and White was the difficulty of their routines as they scored the maximum in that category in the three areas of partner stunts and pyramids as well as the three areas jumps/cheers/dance. They also scored extremely high on the execution of their partner stunts and pyramids as well as jumps and cheer/chant.
Heading into Saturday’s finals Rountree said, “We have competed and won against all of the other region champions except for (Region 7AA) Armuchee. I expect Armuchee to have high scores on Saturday. We are capable of doing really well this weekend. We had expectations for this team all year and this upcoming weekend will be no exception!
Other region champions headed to Columbus are Fitzgerald (1AA), Bacon County (2AA), Dodge County (3AA), Callaway (5AA), KIPP Atlanta (6AA), and Putnam County (8AA).
