Cheerleaders complete regular season in Statesboro
With an impressive first place finish from among seven Class AA schools, the SCHS Lady Gamecock cheerleaders of Vette Rountree and Mary Helen Harrison completed their regular season competition schedule at Statesboro High School on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 21.
Next on the schedule is the Region 4AA meet at Putnam County High School on Nov. 4.
For the first time all season, SCHS fans got to see their only region rival for the title, Jefferson County.
Though the Lady Gamecocks were doing their warmups, parents, who made up a significant portion of the crowd, saw the Lady Warriors, finish in seventh place. Their score was better than 50 points behind the Red and White.
Among the teams bested by the Lady Gamecocks were Bacon County, who barely defeated SCHS earlier and Vidalia, a recent state champion.
Rountree was pleased with the squad’s performance in Statesboro.
“Over the last two competitions, our stunts have been OK, but not what we would consider solid,” Rountree exclaimed. “This week, they were solid. We spent the week focused on sticking our stunts. Our scores were nearly perfect in the areas of primary and secondary partner stunts as well as pyramid.
In standing tumbling the squad “had no hands down and all of the standing tumbling had clean landings,” said Rountree.
What will the Lady Gamecocks work on as the practice time wears down to the region meet?
“This week, we will turn our focus to running tumbling and cleaning up other parts of the routine,” answered Rountree.
