SCHS softball edges Metter 10-7
Holding off home-standing Metter with a key 10-7 3AA win Tuesday, the softball Lady Gamecocks of Billy Pollock improved to 5-0 in the region and put themselves in the driver’s seat for a home state playoff series beginning on Oct. 14.
Improving to 8-4 overall, the team will travel to Waynesboro this Sept. 17 afternoon to face AAAA Burke County before returning home on the 21st to face AAA Southeast Bulloch.
On Tuesday, SCHS will begin the second round robin of 3AA play with a trip to Jefferson County. Dublin will be here on the 24th for yet another region game.
The loss for Metter was their second region loss, the other being against Harlem.
A contest in Sylvania with three-time defending region champion Harlem on Sept. 10 was rained out with the Lady Bulldogs leading 4-1 heading into the home half of the third. The game will be made up (started over) as part of a doubleheader in Harlem on Oct. 8 beginning at 4 p.m. The rematch, and the regular season finale, with Metter will come two days later.
Action in Metter Tuesday saw Victoria Winters bang out a pair of hits including her first homer of the season to drive in four. Pamela Dixon had two hits; GeeGee Beasley had a pair of RBI; Rebekah Woods had a triple and was walked three times, scoring four runs; and Maggie Hafer a double.
The Red and White stole seven bases with Allie Bazemore leading the way with three.
After Metter scored three in the home half of the sixth, aided by two infield errors, to pull within 7-5 and make things extremely tense, the Lady Gamecocks responded with three in the top of the seventh to give themselves their second five-run cushion of the day.
Metter scored twice in the seventh, but left only one runner on base.
In that seventh for SCHS, Woods picked up her triple which was followed by Winters’ homer. Beasley then walked, went to second when Hafer was hit, and scored when Madison Lewis singled.
Kara Canetto (6-4, 3.75) went the first five innings to pick up the victory with Woods (2-0, 3.75) picking up the save. Four of Metter’s runs were unearned.
Region standings through last week (except for SCHS and Metter, which are updated through Tuesday) show Harlem 4-0; SCHS 5-0; Metter 4-2; East Laurens 2-3; Swainsboro 1-3; Dublin and Jeffco 0-4.
The top two teams will automatically host the third and fourth place teams from Region 2AA. Currently, those are Jeff Davis and Bacon County.
Through 12 games, Hafer leads the team with a .517 average (15-for-29), while Bazemore is at .433 (13-30). Hafer, Woods and Winters have 12 RBI each and Bazemore has 11 stolen bases.
Hafer (.576), Bazemore (.533), and Woods (.513) lead in on-base percentage.
