Softball winning streak now at five; 2-0 in region
Banging out 15 hits and stealing 10 bases, the SCHS Lady Gamecocks made short work of home-standing Dublin with a 14-4 Region 3AA win in Dublin Tuesday.
The win made the season-opening three-game losing streak seem a distant memory as it marked the team’s fifth in a row to improve to 5-3 but, more importantly, 2-0 in region play.
Swainsboro is in Sylvania this Sept. 3 afternoon for another 3AA contest beginning at 5:00 and the team will hit the road to East Dublin on Tuesday, Sept. 8, for their fourth region game.
Two-time defending region champion Harlem will be at SCHS on Thursday, Sept. 10.
On Tuesday, junior Allie Bazemore had three hits, while freshman Madison Lewis, sophomore Kara Canetto and senior Victoria Winters each had a pair.
Lewis drove in three.
Canetto started on the mound and went the first two innings before giving way to senior Rebekah Woods who went the final three to pick up her first pitching victory since 2013.
Dublin picked up just four hits, none of which left the infield.
Their opening region contest at the local field on Aug. 27 saw the Red and White waste no time at all in establishing their superiority over the visiting Jefferson County Lady Warriors.
After holding Jeffco scoreless in the top of the first, Canetto led off the home half with a triple.
Payton Ward followed that with a single. When Winters tripled two batters later and SCHS had enough runs for the win.
A three-spot in the fifth finished the game as a run-ruled 9-1 win for the Lady Gamecocks.
On the day, Maggie Hafer, Bazemore, Lewis and Winters had two hits each.
Canetto and Lewis scored a pair of runs each, while Ward, Hafer and Lewis had two RBI each.
Canetto hurled a three-hitter while striking out four and walking three.
