‘Cooter’ at speedway for July 25 ‘Rebel Yell’
Ben Jones, who played “Cooter” on “The Dukes of Hazzard,” was confirmed Wednesday as the grand marshal for the 16th annual “Rebel Yell” at the Screven Motorsports Complex on July 25.
Jones will meet with fans and deliver a message on all four PA systems at the complex between Sylvania and Newington on Highway 21.
His message will in part be about the Confederate flag and how recently the “The Dukes of Hazzard” has been taken off television because of the flag being painted on the General Lee that was driven during the series.
Owners of General Lee Dodge Chargers will be admitted free on July 25 at the complex. Gates open at 2 p.m. Admission is $25 and children 12 and under admitted for free.
The address of the complex is 6118 Savannah Highway (Georgia Hwy. 21).
That Saturday night will have major super late model dirt racing, IHRA Drag Racing, and karts too.
Racing will be on three different tracks all on same night.
The annual “Rebel Yell” Southern National Series will have $5,300 to win and Super Street Road Warriors Pure Stock V8 Mini-Stocks and R-Fours. Also that night will be the “Iron Man Classic” on Savannah River Dragway and Gamecock Karts “Rebel Yell Shootout.”
Jones is an actor, politician, playwright and essayist, best known for his role as “Cooter Davenport” in “The Dukes of Hazzard.” Jones also served for four years in the U.S. House of Representatives from January 1989 to January 1993.
