To the Low Country on a high note

For the first time in history, the Screven County High School Gamecocks will invade the true Low Country of South Carolina Friday night when they travel to Hampton County to face the Wade Hampton Red Devils in an interstate contest.
Kickoff in the den of the Devils is scheduled for 7:30.
SCHS traveled to Allendale County to face the Allendale-Fairfax Tigers in both 1958 and 1960, but to only a few folks is Allendale part of the Low Country.
In the process of the game, Ron Duncan and his troops are seeking to improve to 3-0 on the season for the first time since 2003.
In facing the Red Devils, the Roosters will not see anything they have not seen before as they employ an I-formation similar to what the current Gamecocks run and also the spread formation.  Of note, unlike the Wing-T type option of Appling County and Jefferson County that has truly hurt the Red and White of late, Wade Hampton does not utilize the option nearly as much.
They do, however, rely on a very athletic quarterback.
Wade Hampton also will carry with it a great tradition as they have won a first round playoff game in each of the past four seasons.
A year ago, despite a 5-7 closing worksheet the Red Devils claimed a 57-20 first round playoff win over Battery Creek. They were ousted the following week 56-0 by eventual state champion Dillon.
Dillon won the state championship contest by a 41-3 margin. The lopsided loss for Wade Hampton turned out to be not so bad as it first looked.
The 2014 worksheet for the Red Devils stands at 1-2 as they have blown halftime leads to lose their last two after opening with a 37-0 win over Bethune-Bowman.
Two weeks ago a 10-8 halftime lead on top-five ranked Allendale-Fairfax evaporated in a sea of errors in a 36-10 loss while last week a 7-6 halftime lead that stretched to a 14-6 lead after three ended with a 20-14 loss to intra-county rival Estill.
It is noteworthy that as the Roosters hit the road for the first time this season, WHHS was also 5-1 at home in 2013.
