Lady Gamecock softball falls to Harlem 1-0

In a battle of the last two region unbeatens, Harlem’s Lady Bulldogs, also undefeated overall as well, squeezed across a run in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 1-0 over the Lady Gamecocks of Billy Pollock Aug. 28.
Standing at 6-3 overall and 4-1 in 3AA play, SCHS was rained out at home with Metter on Tuesday.
The contest with Metter, scheduled at the local field, will be made up as part of a doubleheader in Metter Sept. 25. As the last regular season contest before the region playoffs begin on Oct. 1, the two contests may well go a long way toward deciding playoff positions.
Also this week SCHS hosted South Effingham Wednesday after the Sylvania Telephone press time and the team travels to Waynesboro this Sept. 4 afternoon to face Burke County.
The Red and White will make a return trip to Waynesboro to participate in the Burke County Diamond Day, facing Glascock County in their opener.
Jefferson County will be here on Tuesday, Sept. 9, to begin the second round robin of 3AA play and Burke County will make a return trip to face the Lady Gamecocks in Sylvania on Sept. 10.
A busy week will continue Sept. 11 when the team goes to Dublin for yet another region game.
Facing Harlem Aug. 28 the Lady Gamecocks got great pitching from starter Taryn Burns as the senior allowed but two hits and two walks in six innings.
Freshman Kara Canetto ended in the seventh and was greeted with a two-base error that eventually scored on a squeeze bunt.
SCHS managed only three hits, two walks, and was the recipient of one Harlem error off Harlem’s junior ace Cassie Garrett.
Jancy Durrence reached twice, on a hit and a walk, stole a pair of bases, reaching third in the first and second in the third, but was left stranded each time. Allie Bazemore reached on a single in the sixth and stole second, but was pushed no farther. Those were the lone Lady Gamecocks to reach scoring position.
