Cross country takes second in opening meet

Finishing second to AAAAA Evans, the SCHS Lady Gamecock cross country team of Anna Canetto came in ahead of AAAA Burke County and region foe Harlem who hosted the meet Tuesday afternoon.
The squad will next be in action Thursday, Sept. 4, at Southeast Bulloch.
Freshman Katelyn Alveraz (23:45) and senior KB Scruggs (24:00) were the top two runners as the Alveraz topped the two-time defending region champion in their first race as teammates.
In hosting a meet, Harlem seems to have served notice that it intends to race in this year’s region meet Oct. 28 on the SCHS campus.
The Lady Bulldogs have not participated in the previous two region meets, also held at SCHS.
Nevertheless, Canetto said, “The course was great, lots of shade and various trails.”
Behind the top duo were senior Haley Waters in 10th (27:53); junior Laura Stuart 17th (30:00); and sophomore Tyshayla Scruggs 26th (33:32).
“The others have to close the gap,” pointed out Canetto. “Haley’s time was fair. Some of our girls have got to work harder. Our top two are working too hard.”
Evans finished with an impressive 31 to the SCHS 56. Harlem was third with 82 with Burke counting up to 84.
