Locals compete at state on county recreation fields

Two of the Screven County all star teams finished fourth while the other was seventh during the GRPA State Tournaments at the county recreation department.
The tourneys concluded Saturday, July 12, as the Screven County Flea Boys and Midget Boys were fourth and the Flea Girls were seventh. Twenty-five teams competed in the 8-and-under Fleas and 12-and-under Midget baseball.
Visiting Jeff Davis County did well as their Flea Girls and Midgets won the state titles. Jeff Davis’ Flea Boys were runners-up to Evans County.
The Screven County Flea Boys came together as a team to win three games in the tournament before losing out in double-elimination play.
In Screven County’s first game July 9, the locals defeated South Bryan 3-1. The Screven County Flea Boys defeated Pickens County 13-1 on July 10.
The county flea boys would drop their next contest July 10 to eventual champion Evans County 16-0.
On July 11, the Screven County Flea Boys defeated Miller County 4-1.
However, the locals would be defeated by Eastman-Dodge County 13-6 later on July 11 to end their tourney.
The Screven County Midget Boys would win three games in the losers’ bracket after losing to eventual winner Jeff Davis 5-1 in the opener July 9.
The local boys would defeat Irwin County 4-2 on July 10.
In an exciting come-from-behind victory that lapsed over two days, the Screven County Midget Boys defeated Metter 6-5. The game started July 10, but it was suspended because of weather and the remainder of the contest was finished July 11. The local team had to come back from four runs down July 11 to win.
Austin Mealor and Parker Thompson provided home runs in victory over Metter.
The Screven County Midgets would drop their next contest on July 11 to eventual runners-up Appling County 7-2 to end their tourney.
The Screven County Flea Girls had a rough start to the tournament July 10 as they lost to Lanier County 44-0 in three-inning run-rule game.
The Flea Girls of Screven County would lose on July 11 to Glennville to close out their tournament.
