Lady Gamecock tennis rolls into quarters again

Rolling past visiting Region 2’s second-seeded Jeff Davis 4-1 Monday, the SCHS Lady Gamecocks of Diane Freeman catapulted themselves into their 24th Elite Eight in the last 25 years in the state playoffs.
They are scheduled to meet 1AA champion Thomasville Friday on the local courts at 2 p.m. The match originally was scheduled for Wednesday, but was moved because of the potential rain storms.
As both teams were region champions, the site was determined by a coin flip conducted at the GHSA office after the Monday results were recorded.
SCHS wasted little time in establishing their superiority against the Lady Jackets.
The Lady Gamecocks claimed the first set of all five matches in barely half an hour.
By the one hour mark, three wins were on the board and the next round was assured.
Jancy Durrence (6-1, 6-2); Mallorie Boswell (6-0, 6-0); and Michaela Iwinski/Allie Bazemore (6-2, 6-1) improved the Red and White to 20-2 on the season.
Pamela Wooten and Haley Jackson came off at 6-3, 6-3 but Rebekah Woods, after winning the opening set 6-3, fell 1-6 in the second eventually losing a third set tie breaker 6-10.
Prior to Monday’s contest with Jeff Davis, the Lady Gamecocks secured a bittersweet victory over Region 1AA’s fourth-seeded Fitzgerald April 23.
The Lady Hurricane forfeited and did not send a single player with the Fitzgerald boys who showed up at SCHS to lose 3-0, pull the remaining pair of matches and quickly exit town.
The result was very disappointing to the SCHS players, especially when considering Fitzgerald normally has a top-notched Fitzgerald athletic program.
