Soccer downs visiting Johnson, 4-1

Outshooting their visitors 42-1, the SCHS soccer Lady Gamecocks lethargically defeated A. R. Johnson’s Lady Panthers 4-1 at Kelly Memorial Stadium Tuesday afternoon.
On Wednesday, the Red and White traveled to Dublin for a mammoth contest with the Lady Irish and they are scheduled to host T. W. Josey this, April 17 afternoon. The regular season finale is next Tuesday, April 22, in East Dublin against region champion East Laurens.
Anna Smith got things started early when she kicked in the rebound of a Tara Thompson shot with 28:53 remaining in the first half. The score was one of only two on the day through the regular fashion. Thompson and Kayla Chance were each successful on penalty kicks set up by hand balls in the box. Haley Waters scored the other goals.
Johnson pulled within 2-1 with 27:03 remaining in the contest, converting their lone shot of the day, in the process scoring their first goal of the season on one of the “Big Five” of Region 3AA. The win raised the Lady Gamecock record to 10-5 with a 7-4 overall record in 3AA.
Through action of Tuesday among the five 3AA playoff hopefuls their record among themselves was East Laurens 6-1, Dublin 3-3, Westside 3-4, Screven County 2-4, and Harlem 2-4. Westside upset East Laurens 1-0 on Tuesday to really help its playoff chances. Heading into yesterday action remaining among the group shows SCHS vs. Dublin and East Laurens and Harlem vs. Westside and Dublin as the only remaining contests.
Any ties not broken by head to head competition will be settled by goals allowed against region foes other than Laney, who has forfeited matches. Josey has yet to score on any of the group and Johnson has scored only on SCHS. The Lady Gamecocks especially need a win either yesterday or next Tuesday.
Donnta Kemp, the team’s lone senior, was honored at halftime of Tuesday’s contest.
