Girls steamroll to another region championship

Rolling through both seeded teams from the other half of the region, the SCHS Lady Gamecock tennis team of Diane Freeman soundly whipped East Laurens and Dublin to claim another Region 3AA championship April 16 at the Mill Creek Complex in Statesboro.
The team opened Class AA state tournament play Wednesday when Region 1AA fourth seed Fitzgerald was scheduled to journey to the local courts.
Facing Dublin’s Lady Irish, the 3AA-A champions, in the 3AA title tilt for the second consecutive season the Lady Gamecocks claimed the title without losing a set, also for the second consecutive season.
Close in two matches, the Red and White rolled in the middle three.
Mallorie Boswell (6-1, 6-3); Jancy Durrence (6-3, 6-2); and the No. 1 doubles team of Pamela Wooten/Haley Jackson 6-2, 6-0 were easy winners.
At No. 1 singles Rebekah Woods (6-4, 6-4) and at No. 2 doubles the freshman team of Kristin Thomas/Hannah Kumjian (6-3, 6-4) the competition was a little stiffer.
On day later than originally scheduled after the original April 15 date was rained out, SCHS opened the day with a quick 5-0 win over A sub-region runner-up East Laurens’ Lady Falcons, losing but eight games in the process.
The scores went Woods (6-4, 6-1); Boswell (6-1, 6-1); Durrence (6-0, 6-0); Wooten/Jackson (6-0, 6-0); and Michaela Iwinski/Allie Bazemore (6-0, 6-1).
Heading into the April 23 matchup with Fitzgerald, individual records for the Lady Gamecocks who now stand at 18-2 (the forfeit from Savannah Arts is now official) are Woods at 11-9; Boswell at 15-3; Durrence at 17-2; Wooten/Jackson at 15-2; and the teams of Iwinski/Bazemore at 6-1, while Thomas/Kumjian are at 5-1.
