Boys tennis edges Westside for title

In a contest literally not decided until the final point of the final individual match was completed, the SCHS Gamecocks of Suzanna Kirkland upset Westside’s Patriots 3-2 to repeat as Region 3AA champions in matches played at the Mill Creek Complex in Statesboro April 16.
To hold on to their championship, the Roosters had to down a pair of sub-region champions.
Region 1AA fourth-seed Fitzgerald was on the schedule April 23 in the opening round of the Class AA state tournament. The second round must be completed by April 29.
Nearly three hours of play into the 3AA championship, that title from a Gamecock perspective was on the shoulders of freshman Mason Oglesby playing at No. 3 singles. Everything was knotted at 2-2 with SCHS having claimed victories at both doubles and lost at the top two singles.
With everyone remaining at the complex watching, Oglesby recorded a 7-5 victory in a third set tie breaker to give SCHS another trophy for the case.
After splitting sets at 6-2, 4-6, Oglesby had actually served two match points at 5-4. He ended up losing the points, his serve, and the next game as well to fall behind 5-6.
However, the freshman rallied to win the next game to send the set into a tie breaker. Jumping out front quickly in the “overtime,” he held on for the win.
Early contests in the match had the doubles teams of Zachary Weaver/James Woods winning 7-5, 7-5; and Zachary Anderson/Bobby Hodges winning 7-6(6), 3-6, 6-1. By the time the title was won, Hodges was in uniform for the baseball Gamecocks in Sylvania eventually pitching 1.1 scoreless inning of relief.
The top of the lineup saw another three-setter with Jacob Lariscy falling 6-0, 4-6, 5-7 after Ryan Bazemore lost 2-6, 2-6.
A measure of revenge was captured as the Gamecocks had fallen to the Patriots 4-1 in Augusta March 4. That match was the de facto sub-region contest.
To get to the championship contest with Westside, the Roosters first had to go through 3AA-A champion Dublin’s Irish. A year ago the same pair met for the region title with the Gamecocks besting the Green and Gold that time as well.
The April 16 final count was 3-1 but the match was well on its way to being 4-1. Winners were Oglesby (6-3, 6-4), Weaver/Woods (7-6 (7), 6-2), and Anderson/Hodges (6-1, 6-0). Losing was Lariscy (0-6, 6-2, 3-6). Bazemore was up 6-1, 3-2 when his match was pulled.
For the Gamecocks heading into the scheduled matchup with 1AA fourth-seeded Fitzgerald Wednesday, records were Lariscy 4-15; Bazemore 4-7; Oglesby 8-11; Weaver/Woods 10-4; and Anderson/Hodges 5-3. Anderson also is 5-4 with Matthew Thomas.
