Lady Gamecock soccer downs Jefferson County 4-0

With a forfeit looming this April 3 afternoon in lieu of a scheduled region match in Augusta with Lucy Laney, the SCHS Lady Gamecock soccer team stood at 8-4, 5-3 in 3AA play heading into a key makeup match with Harlem at Kelly Memorial Stadium Wednesday.
The April 2 game was scheduled to be played after the Sylvania Telephone’s press deadline.
As next week is spring break, the team will not be in action again until April 15 when A.R. Johnson comes to town.
Traveling to Louisville to face the Lady Warriors of Jefferson County Tuesday, SCHS came home with a 4-0 victory.
Next spring Jefferson County will be a region match and will find itself on the schedule on a home-and-home basis.
Currently, non-region foes are difficult for Terry Markovcic to schedule because of the absence of a boys team.
In Tuesday’s win, junior Dana Kemp had three goals and freshman Tara Thompson one in the victory. Sophomore goalie Whitney Gay had a trio of saves in posting her sixth shutout of the season and third consecutive.
For the second time this season and the third consecutive time over two seasons, a scheduled matchup between the soccer Lady Gamecocks and the Lady Bulldogs of Harlem was postponed because of weather.
With a guaranteed state playoff spot on the line, the March 28 home matchup with those Lady Bulldogs was rained out with April 2 as the scheduled makeup.
Standings through the weekend past of the “Big Five” against each other showed East Laurens, who has already clinched the region title, 6-0; Dublin 3-3; SCHS 2-3; Westside 2-4; and Harlem 1-4.
The Gamecocks still have a legitimate chance at a second place finish in the 3AA. There are no games scheduled between the teams this week.
