Lady Gamecock basketball opens in Alma Nov. 17
Getting a jump start on the Gamecocks, the SCHS Lady Gamecock basketball of new coach Stephanie Davis will open its 2017-18 season Friday night in the Bacon County gymnasium in Alma as they face the host Lady Raiders.
The Nov. 17 game is tentatively scheduled for 7 p.m. On Saturday afternoon Nov. 18, the team will return to Alma to face Appling County at 5 p.m.
Next on the schedule is a contest in Millen on Nov. 28 against the Lady Eagles. It is possible that game could be rescheduled depending on football developments. Both Screven County and Jenkins County are in the state football playoffs.
The game of interest for local sports fans of the Bacon Tournament is the season lidlifter for each team. The Lady Gamecocks have not won a game since Feb. 2, 2013, while the Lady Raiders have not won a game since Jan. 1, 2014.
SCHS has accumulated 87 losses in a row, while BCHS has accumulated 69 in a row. Someone’s streak will end Friday evening.
“I think that we will be able to compete in the tournament,” said Davis. “The girls are working hard. We realize that it is a process, and the girls are buying into the process. We have ninth and 10th graders that are going to play a major role this year. We have several seniors that are showing great leadership, so we expect some positive things this year.”
In addition to the youngsters to whom Davis refers, there are also a number of veterans including virtually an entire starting lineup.
Included are leading scorers in the duo of juniors Madison Lewis and Skyla Rentz along with sophomore Petrice Roberts.
