County accepting applications for manager

The Screven County Board of Commissioners are looking for the right person to be the next county manager.
The board has position advertisements running on governmental websites and this week an advertisement is published in the Sylvania Telephone.
In September, county manager Rick Jordan confirmed that he is looking at retirement in the coming months.
No definite timeline has been given by Jordan, but his announcement afforded the commission the opportunity to begin the placement of advertisements for the position.
Jordan has served as the county manager for 17 years.
Commission chairman Will Boyd said Wednesday that he would like, if possible, for the hiring of a new manager to overlap with Jordan during a transition period.
Whether that is feasible is yet to be determined.
“We want to get a good applicant. It may take a week or maybe six months,” Boyd said. “Rick has the best interest of Screven County at heart.”
The current advertisement in the Telephone details the necessary qualifications for the job. Boyd said the commission wanted the local public to also have an opportunity to apply.
According to the advertisement, “ The board is seeking an energetic professional for the position of County Manager.  Responsibilities include the day to day administration and coordination of the business of the county for the Board of Commissioners; preparation of the annual budget (presently, approximately $12 million, and a current employee count of 352); development of long and short range capital improvement budgets, management of purchasing; hiring, discharging, management and development personnel; responsibility for maintenance and development of public works; property control;  risk management; inter-governmental relations; policy development; implementation and general oversight of county activities and functions; maintenance of records of the Board of Commissioners; serving as liaison to elected officials; assisting department heads and the elected officials in the solution of technical problems as may be requested; representing the Board of Commissioners at meeting of state and county boards and agencies as requested; and performing other duties generally required of county managers and as may be required or directed by the Board of Commissioners from time to time.
The position is responsible for the overall management, administration, and coordination of county government, including the communication with department heads in accordance with policies formulated by the Board of Commissioners and other authorized elected officials.
Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree or higher in public administration, business administration or a closely related field, preferably with at least seven years of progressively responsible experience of city/county administration/management or equivalent experience involving private/public institutions.  Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and high degree of integrity and responsiveness required.  Candidate must have the ability to be bonded, have a valid State of Georgia motor vehicle license and agree to reside in Screven County.  Salary is negotiable depending on education and experience.  The position has an excellent benefit package.
