Lady Gamecocks roll past Laney 18-0; now 5-0 in region play

Heading toward the regular season region championship contest in Harlem on Sept. 19, the SCHS Lady Gamecock softball team of Jim Randall Doyle rolled past home-standing Laney by an 18-0 count on Tuesday.

Now 11-3 overall and 5-0 in Region 4AA the team has only Glenn Hills remaining in other region play and that comes in Sylvania on Sept. 12.

Between then and now, the team will travel to Statesboro this Sept. 7 afternoon to face the Lady Devils at Mill Creek at 5:00 before hosting Southeast Bulloch on Monday, Sept. 11, and also AAAA Cross Creek on Wednesday, Sept. 13. Then, on the following Tuesday comes the clash with the defending 4AA and Class AA state champion Lady Bulldogs of Harlem.

On Wednesday, Sept. 6, after the Sylvania Telephone press deadline, AAAAAA Grovetown was in Sylvania for a doubleheader.

With the 18-0, no-hit win over Laney under their belt, the Lady Gamecocks have outscored their five region opponents by a margin of 83-0 and have allowed only four hits. On Tuesday, Sarah Beasley (5-2, 0.632) went the three innings, allowed no hits while striking out seven and walking two.

Laney’s pitching saw the Lady Gamecocks bang out 17 hits put together by 12 players. Only two players on the roster did not register a hit. One of them walked and scored a run.

Recording two hits were Payton Ward, Kara Canetto, Maggie Hafer, Sarah Beasley, and Camille Seckinger. Ward, Canetto, Hafer, and Beasley picked up two RBIs each as well.

SCHS scored 10 in the second and seven in the third.

However, it was a horribly disappointing performance for the Lady Gamecocks in a 10-5 loss to Southeast Bulloch in Brooklet on Aug. 30.

The Red and White allowed their Lady Jacket hosts an incredible eight-run third to break open a 1-1 contest.

The inning saw SCHS allow four walks/hit batsmen, four hits, and a single, combined with a very costly error. The Lady Gamecocks actually outhit their hosts 10-8 with Sarah Beasley having three hits and Kara Canetto two. Beasley also had a pair of RBI.

Canetto (4-1, 1.76) took the loss.

On Sept. 11, SEB will come to Sylvania.
