X-country takes second at Ray Miller Invitational

Running with a complete team in their second meet of the season, the SCHS Lady Gamecock cross country team of Cindy LeMaster took second place in the A-AAA division of the Ray Miller Invitational at Magnolia Springs on Sept. 12.
The team is in Claxton this Sept. 17 afternoon and will host its first meet of the season on Sept. 23 at 4:30.
Despite the two divisions (A-AA and AAA-AAAAA), all runners competed against each other giving all involved the chance to get more prepared for larger meets such as the region competitions.
As the meet was held under wet conditions, sometimes in a mist, LeMaster said, “Due to the weather conditions during this meet, I was very proud of each of my girls. They all ran their hardest and best and did not let the rain or mud stand in their way.”
In the A-AA division, the Red and White took second with a score of 33 behind 7-A Aquinas’ 29, finishing ahead of 3-A Jenkins County’s 58. Calvary Day had the top two runners but did not have the five members necessary for a team score.
The addition of softball players Kara Canetto and Allie Bazemore to the regular lineup of Laura Stuart, Katelyn Alvarez, and Ty Scruggs enabled the team to record a team score.
In the overall competition, all the Lady Gamecocks finished in the top 50.
Alvarez (22:57) was 10th overall, but fourth in the SCHS division. Other Lady Gamecock finishes were Canetto at 26:27 (seventh in division); Stuart at 27:26, Scruggs at 28:44 and Bazemore at 30:44.
The SCHS team total was 152 overall.
