Telephone earns dozen state press awards

The Sylvania Telephone claimed a dozen Georgia Press Association awards at the 129th annual state convention at the Weston Jekyll Island on Jekyll Island on June 5.
Of the 12 honors for the 136-year-old publication, four of which were for first place as the newspaper was in competition in one of the GPA’s largest weekly divisions based on circulation. Earlier this year the Telephone won four advertising awards to bring the newspaper’s total to 16 GPA awards for the 2014 calendar year.
The Telephone won second place for two overall newspaper categories -- Lifestyle Coverage and Editorial Page – and third place for Sports Section or Pages.
The other nine honors were individual awards.
Former Telephone staff writer Derek Moy captured two first place awards. One was for Photo Essay, while the other was for Feature Writing.
Moy’s photo essay was on the Georgia Southern University Raptor Center’s visit to the Screven County Library during the library’s summer reading program. His feature category winner was based on a collection of three required articles for the entry.
Burton Kemp Jr. claimed first place for Sports Column. The three submissions also were required for Kemp’s column entry.
Enoch Autry won five awards. The Telephone editor earned first place for Feature Photograph; second place for Sports Feature Photograph; and third places for News Photograph, Sports Photograph, and Humorous Column.
Autry’s feature photograph was taken at the Cub Scout “Get Down & Get Dirty” event. The sports feature photo was of a Georgia Southern cheerleader flipping in the air The sports photo was of a touchdown in the Gamecocks’ state playoff game and the news photo was city firefighters during a training session. 
The humorous column three-column entry was about the Screven County Livestock Festival and the celebrity showmanship competition.
The Telephone staff also collected a second place in Business Coverage. The three-article submission for this category were
“I am very fortunate to be part of a team that was judged to be winners of 12 state journalism honors for editorial content,” said Autry of the GPA awards that were judged by members of the Missouri Press Association. “I would be remiss not to also thank the community for its continued support of the Telephone throughout the years.”
