Man dies in boating crash at river

The body of a man who had been missing was recovered from the Savannah River Monday morning.
Fifty-one-year-old Charles Winfield Morel Jr. of Effingham County was discovered earlier this week after perishing in a boating accident on Saturday.
According to witness reports, the boat he was in flipped and landed on top of the man, killing him. His body was subsequently taken to the Screven County coroner’s office.
Heading up the investigation was the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is spearheading the investigation along with the Screven County Sheriff’s Department, Georgia State Patrol, as well as sheriff’s departments and EMS units from Screven, Effingham and Burke counties.
Funeral services for Morel was held June 4 at the Mizpah United Methodist Church near Kildare.
DNR is strongly urging boaters to exercise caution to minimize the chance of boating accidents over the summer.
