Survey says: Sylvania city workers really nice

Sally Field became one of America’s favorite sweethearts when she comprised her role as “Carrie” along side co-star Burt Reynolds in the 1977 movie “Smokey and the Bandit.”
It, however, would be Field’s “Edna Spalding” character in the 1984 film “Places in the Heart” where she claimed her Academy Award.
In her acceptance speech for the honor, Field uttered these venerable words, “….I can’t deny the fact that you like me, right now, you like me!”
It seems that Sylvania city officials also can voice that same phrase for services or values when it comes to being considerate. On the other end of the results tally, utility rates, quality of electrical services, and animal control did not fare well.
In a recent 2011 citizen survey, Sylvania scored the highest possible (100 percent) for friendliness of city employees; competence/knowledgeable city employees; overall professionalism of city employees; and safety in your own neighborhood.
The city also garnered a 95 percent approval rating for cleanliness of the city; overall quality of services; preservation of downtown; landscape appearance of public areas; and residential trash collection.
Closely behind at 94 percent were responsiveness of police department and adequacy of traffic signals.
“We really need to commend our staff and personnel,” said Sylvania Mayor Margaret Evans to city council members earlier in December.
At the bottom of the services and values were availability of sidewalks and bike paths at a low 28 percent, while removal of blighted property was 33 percent.
Animal control and quality of electrical services were 39 percent. Cost of living; city crime prevention; and city utility rates were 50 percent.
Affordable housing was 60 percent and downtown safety was 63 percent. Residential storm water maintenance and quality of tap water both were 67 percent.
Under economic development, those who filled out the surveys were not too pleased. In each of the three categories, 88 percent of survey participants selected “very slow” or “slow.”
As for the growth of population, 55.560 percent replied “very slow. A percentage of 33.36 picked “slow;” 5.56 percent chose “moderate;” and 5.56 percent “don’t know.”
For job growth, 55.6 percent opted for “very slow;” 33.36 percent “slow;” 5.56 percent “fast;” and 5.56 percent “don’t know.”
Responders to business growth went 50.04 percent “very slow;” 38.92 percent “slow;” 5.56 percent “moderate;” and 5.56 percent “don’t know.”
