Screven County BOE hopes Duncan can invigorate football program
South Carolina native Ron Duncan was named the new head coach of the Screven County High School football Gamecocks at the January meeting of the Board of Education Monday.
Just the 20th head coach in the 62-year history of SCHS, Duncan was named as the replacement for Greg Manior, who recorded a 5-15 worksheet over the past two seasons.
Asked to profile himself Duncan says he is a “motivated, high energy coach with a demonstrated track record of creating a successful football program (with) the ability to foster positive community support” He also considers himself to “possess strong discipline skills.”
The school board Monday night also hired Duncan’s wife Misty, a 16-year teaching veteran. She will teach at the county’s elementary school.
Coach Duncan has been an educator for 18 years and will teach physical education.
The Duncans have two children -- fifth grader Jackson and first grader Laney Claire.
Though Coach Duncan led Seneca High School to the Class AAA state playoffs in both 2008 and 2009, Duncan made his mark at Bamberg-Ehrhardt where he compiled a 50-12 record over five seasons 2003-2008. Over that span his teams won at least one Class A state playoff game in each season, a pair of region championships (2006 and 2007), and twice advanced to the state semifinals before falling to the eventual state champion by three points (2005 and 2007).
Prior to his arrival in Bamberg there had been just one winning season in the previous decade and an average of three wins a year.
Before landing his first head coaching job at Bamberg-Ehrhardt Duncan was an assistant coach at Crescent High School in Anderson SC, Strom Thurmond High School in Edgefield, S.C., and Camden High School in Camden, S.C.
After graduating from Newberry (SC) College in 1993 as a four year letterman with two years of starting under his belt, Duncan was an assistant coach, in charge of defensive backs and wide receivers, at Crescent. From 1995-1998 he was the Strom Thurmond defensive coordinator. There he was part of two region champions and teams that were state runner-up and state quarterfinalists.
At Camden, between 1999-2002 as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach there were four consecutive region championships, a state title in 2001 and a state runner-up in 2002. The Bamberg-Ehrhardt became his first head coaching stop.
With the success of Bamberg and Seneca, Duncan decided to try to get into Georgia coaching. When things did not work out for the job in Sylvania in 2010 he became the defensive coordinator at Elbert County High School. The Blue Devils have recorded a 20-4 worksheet over the past two seasons. This time things did work out for him to become the mentor of the Roosters.
