Perdue’s more furloughs, cuts have school district adjusting again
As projected, Gov. Sonny Perdue announced Friday that Georgia’s more than 250,000 teachers and state employees would be furloughed additional days and school systems’ budgets would be sliced again.
Screven County Superintendent Whit Myers said Tuesday the local administration will work with the three school principals to amend the calendar to accommodate the furloughed days before the end of the 2009-2010 year on June 30.
While Myers and other superintendents around the state still continue to gather more information about the newest cuts, Myers said he expected the school district to be able to handle the reduction without program cuts.
“I don’t anticipate any cutting of programs,” said Myers, who expects the local school year for 2010-2011 to be shortened by 10 days to save funds.
Myers said Georgia has applied for President Barack Obama’s new “Race to the Top” funds. Obama said Tuesday he plans to ask Congress for $1.35 billion to extend an education program for states.
The Screven County BOE is scheduled to convene Feb. 8 at its usual meeting time on the second Monday of the month at 5 p.m.
