Recent heavy rain has Screven County farmers scrambling and some people joking that they could use fishing poles in the streets in Sylvania.
Rainfall amounts can vary widely, with one spot getting a lot when another location nearby gets very little, said Steve Taylor, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Charleston. But he said overall, the area has gotten 3 inches to 5 inches of rain over the last couple of weeks.
The Savannah River at Burton’s Ferry was a foot above flood stage at mid-week and was expected to rise another 6 inches before dropping, Taylor said.
“We went from a drought a couple of years ago right into a flood,” Taylor said.
Rain last week caused some grief for residents of First Street in Sylvania, with cars creating waves and residents taking to the streets with fishing poles.
The rainfall has been enough that the ground is saturated, leaving ponds of standing water in areas that usually are dry. “Our soil moisture is at its brim,” said Ray Hicks, Screven County extension agent.
“It’s pretty well put a halt to any field work that was going on,” he said.
The wet weather kept some producers from finishing their cotton and soybean harvests at the end of the year, Hicks said. And some small grains were delayed or not planted at all.
Some farmers who were able to plant small grains have to re-apply fertilizer that has been washed away. That, combined with an unusually long streak of days with freezing temperatures, and times are tough, Hicks said.
“I just hope the good Lord will keep the moisture coming in the summer when we need it,” he said.
