Man injured in 2008 crash indicted for homicide; others indicted by grand jury

First Byline:
G.G. Rigsby

A man seriously injured in an automobile accident on Highway 301 south of Sylvania on Nov. 2, 2008, was indicted Tuesday on charges of homicide by vehicle and driving under the influence of alcohol.
In other action Tuesday, the Screven County grand jury handed down indictments in a home invasion in Sylvania, the murder of a recent high school graduate, the beating of a pregnant girl, a meth lab in Hiltonia and a couple of traffic stops that led to drug arrests.
In the traffic fatality, Willie Daryel Smith, Buttermilk Road, 33, was indicted in the death of Cameron Ricardo Jones, 31, of Sylvania. The men were in a 1998 Ford Crown Victoria that was heading south on Highway 301 at about 8:30 p.m. that Sunday night, when the car ran off the road and struck a tree.
The accident occurred about six miles south of Sylvania, on a dark stretch of road that had no street lights. It was not raining at the time.
Smith was thrown about 20 feet from the car and died at the scene. Firefighters cut the roof from the car to free Jones, who was airlifted to the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.
Shortly after the crash, Trooper 1st Class Bruce Rowell said which man was driving and which was a passenger was still being investigated.
The state patrol’s Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team, based in Reidsville, conducted the investigation. Sgt. 1st Class Chris Lacienski, commander of the Sylvania post, said such complicated investigations can take a long time to conclude.
Also indicted Tuesday were three men accused in an armed home invasion and chase in Sylvania on April 11. Two gunmen went into a house on Clark Circle and robbed two adults and a juvenile of an undisclosed amount of cash, said Lt. Tony Taylor of the Sylvania police department. They fled on foot.
A man spotted near the house led police on a chase up to 100 miles an hour through Screven County and into Bulloch County. He drove over spike strips and crashed into a tree and was arrested. One of the other two was arrested about a month later and the third remains at large.
Indicted were: Travis Brown, Rakeen Rayneil Hicks and Eungen Hunter. All three face charges of armed robbery; attempted armed robbery; burglary; and four counts of aggravated assault. Hicks also faces a charge of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.
Hicks was arrested after the chase. Hunter was arrested on May 17 and Brown is still at large.
Also indicted Tuesday was Roosevelt Watson Jr., 20, of Honey Road, who is accused of murder in the shooting death of a recent Screven County High School graduate.
Quiton Emmanuel Brown, 19, was found shot to death on June 9, lying on a driveway behind a house on Waynesboro Highway, south of Hiltonia.
Watson was indicted for murder, two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during commission of certain crimes. Details of the case have not been released, but the indictment said Watson was demanding cash from Brown while threatening him with a shotgun.
Brown, who lived on Lawton Road, was among 191 students who graduated from Screven County High School on May 28.
In another indictment, three men from Statesboro and one from Portal were accused in an armed home invasion on April 5. They were accused of beating a 17-year-old girl who was six months pregnant, trying to cause her to have a miscarriage.
Sheriff Mike Kile has said the girl and her unborn child did not suffer permanent injuries from the attack.
Indicted were: Christopher Marcellus Hall, Aviel Israel Jones, Antario Jaquez Scott and Edwin Wilson. Each was charged with: criminal attempt to commit feticide; two counts of aggravated assault; burglary; false imprisonment; and possession of a firearm during commission of certain crimes.
In the meth lab case, three people were indicted: Audley Willette Boddiford, Candice Reddick Boddiford and Henry Brooks Morris. Each was charged with trafficking in methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine; and manufacture of methamphetamine in the presence of a child.
Deputies investigated a tip on Nov. 6, 2009, and found the remains of a lab that had been used previously to make meth, at a house at 173 Forehand Lane in Hiltonia.
In another case, the grand jury indicted a man who led Sylvania police on a car chase that ended in a crash, a pursuit on foot and a number of traffic and drug charges.
Alonza Lorenzo Pierce, 19, of Newington Highway, was indicted on charges of: possession of cocaine with intent to distribute; possession of ecstasy; fleeing and attempting to elude a police officer; obstruction of an officer; possession of marijuana; driving under the influence of alcohol; and driving while license suspended or revoked.
Sylvania police officer Timothy Phillips was on routine patrol at 1:40 a.m. on April 17 when he noticed a 2008 Nissan Versa parked in the middle of Georgia Avenue. When he approached the car, the driver turned on the headlights and began moving at a slow pace. Phillips tried to stop the car on S. Main Street, but the driver accelerated, ran a stop sign and hit a tree.
The driver fled on foot and Phillips caught him. The passenger got away. In the car, officers found what appeared to be cocaine, ecstasy pills and marijuana. They also confiscated $873 in cash.
The grand jury also indicted two men found with drugs after running a stop sign in Sylvania -- Marreo Rayshawn Jacobs and Magic Antice White.
Jacobs was indicted for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute; driving under the influence of alcohol; possession of drug-related objects; and stop sign violation. White was indicted for possession of cocaine with intent to distribute; possession of Xanax; possession of marijuana; possession of drug-related objects; and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
