Tuesday is Spay Day, and Friends of Screven County Animals is celebrating by having a drawing for a $30 gift certificate to Donna’s Bakery.
Tickets are $1 and can be purchased from the following Friends’ members: Joy Evans, Darryl deGroat, Marti Kent, Kathryn Youles, Margaret Evans and Claudette Johnson. Proceeds will help spay and neuter Screven County animals.
The drawing will be at Donna’s Bakery at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
Spay Day is an annual campaign by the Humane Society to encourage people to spay or neuter pets. In Screven County, 95 percent of the animals taken to the county shelter are euthanized, said Evans, spay-neuter chairman for Friends.
She said cost is frequently cited as a reason why people don’t spay or neuter their pets. Friends has arranged for SNAC, or the Spay & Neuter Alliance Clinic of Ridgeland, S.C., to come to Screven County every other month to pick up pets and spay or neuter them at the following prices: male cat, $50; female cat, $60; male dog, $65; and female dog, $75.
For more information about SNAC’s services or to make an appointment, go to www.snac1.com or call (843) 645-2500.
Meanwhile, County Manager Rick Jordan said heavy rain lately has delayed work on the county’s new animal shelter. The shelter will be built across the street from the site originally planned on Rocky Ford Road.
Jordan said that’s because the site across the street already has electricity and a fence around it. The dumpsters that must be moved to make way for the shelter will be relocated somewhere nearby, he said.
