Little bit of intrigue on horizon for elections

While qualifying for Screven County municipal elections were set to conclude last week, the race for the position of mayor of Newington still remains unclear on how many and who will be on the ballot.
As of Tuesday, qualifying for the Newington mayor was being challenged. Newington’s current mayor is Donald Scott.
However, the council candidates in Newington have been determined for the election to be held on Nov. 7 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at town and city polling sites.
Two council member seats for Post 1 and Post 2 were up for Newington and Brian Barrs and Sandra Roberts qualified.
In Sylvania, three council seats will be on the ballot and four candidates have qualified – two incumbents and two political newcomers. Incumbents Tripp Sheppard, who is the current mayor pro tem, and Clint Williams qualified. Craig Lariscy and Wallis E. “Eddie” Lovett also have qualified.
Incumbent Connie Beasley chose not to qualify for re-election.
In Rocky Ford, a general election will be held for the purpose of the election of mayor and three town council members.
Two have qualified to oppose each other for mayor – Danny Burke and incumbent Ken Mock. Three have qualified for the three council seats – Andrew Dudley, Samantha Forehand and Willette Mock.
All persons desiring to qualify as a candidate in the general election for Rocky Ford must do so by filing notice of candidacy at the Screven County Probate Court Office and pay qualifying fees at that time.
The qualifying fee for Rocky Ford mayor and council members is $1. Qualifying is open today, but will close as of noon on Friday, Aug. 25.
In Hiltonia, three council member seats are available with four qualifiers, two of whom are incumbents. Incumbents Jeremy Forehand and Bobby C. Mobley qualified as did Laronzo Brooks and Ben Hodges.
Additionally, a special election will be on the Nov. 7 Hiltonia ballot as well as Shirley Walker will face no opposition.
In Oliver, no general election will be conducted. However, one council seat remains vacant.
