Only hours remain to qualify for many seats
Qualifying in local races for the November General Election concludes at noon Friday.
As of the Sylvania Telephone’s press time, the qualifying throughout the county had been sluggish.
Officials expect more to qualify as the deadline nears.
In Sylvania, Preston Dees, who resigned his seat on the city council to do so, has qualified to run for mayor of the city.
Joe Cleland who was voted into the role of mayor pro tem last month has qualified for a council seat. Dees served as the mayor pro tem.
Sylvania Mayor Margaret Evans announced in the Aug. 27 edition of the Telephone of her intentions not to seek re-election.
Sylvania has three city council seats in this election. The seats currently are held by Cleland, Ben Mercer and Ben Smith.
In Oliver, three council seats are open for qualifying.
Hiltonia has three open council seats, while Newington also has three open council spots.
Rocky Ford has two open council seats.
To qualify for the open seats, individuals should contact their respective municipalities.
All persons desiring to qualify as candidates in the election should do so by filing notice of their candidacy at city hall and paying their qualifying fees at that time.
The election will be conducted in the city on Tuesday, Nov. 3, but advance voting begins Oct. 12 at the Screven County Registrar’s Office.
