Kent more than a doctor
Thu, 08/20/2015 - 2:04pm
For 53 years, the Kents have called Screven County home and during those 53 years the community has rejoiced in them being here.
Dr. Bill Kent has been much more than a doctor to the residents. He has been a constant friend.
Now Dr. Kent has his spouse Marty will move to the Lookout Mountain area to be closer to their children and grandchildren.
The Kents are expected to move later this month.
The Kents first met in Augusta at the Medical College of Georgia hospital when Dr. Kent was in medical school and Marty worked in the lab as a medical technologist.
They were introduced by Marty’s roommate and they were married in 1961.
They came to Sylvania in 1962 and Dr. Kent opened a private practice of family medicine where he stayed from 1962 - 2000.
After retirement, Dr. Kent continued to work in the hosptial emergency room from 2000-2015. He started the CPR program in Screven County and was an instructor for 40 years, as well as ACLS for six years and PALS two years.
Dr. Kent was a member of the Jaycees, Lions Club and on the county recreation board for a number of years. Marty was a member of the Junior Woman’s Club.
The Kents both served as Sunday School teachers for high school students for approximately 15 years and were on the youth advisory board. They were members of the First Baptist choir for 50 years where Dr. Kent served as president.
They also served on various church committees over time.
Dr. Kent served as president of Screven County arts council.
Marty was a significant volunteer at FoSCA when it began and still assists with the organization.
They were avid tennis players, skiers and rescued greyhounds off the race track circuit.
Presently, they enjoy their two Boston terriers, gardening, bird watching and are significantly involved in the lives of their five granddaughters in Lookout Mountain, Tenn., and Charlotte, N.C.
