Students return to classes Monday
Screven County students will head back to school on Monday, Aug. 3, but they also will have a chance to attend orientations and an open house beforehand.
The systemwide open house for the Screven County School System will be Friday, July 31, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the elementary, middle and high schools.
Orientations for those students who will be entering a particular school new will be today, July 30.
The PreK orientation drop-in will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the elementary school. The sixth grade orientation will be from 5 to 6 p.m. at the middle school. The ninth grade orientation will be in the auditorium at the high school at 6 p.m.
The Community Christian School also will have an open house for students.
On Sunday at 2:30 p.m. starting at the county courthouse parking lot will be a prayer walk as the public will have the chance to go to the various schools to pray for the students, teachers and school system.
This week’s edition of the Sylvania Telephone contains information about the 2015-2016 school year. The newspaper also includes the annual school calendar.
Each of the schools have multiple changes in its staffing, including the middle school as Caleb White will serve as an assistant principal and also assist at the transportation department at the maintenance and operations facility on Pine Street.
This year the school system plans to find multiple ways to use the slogan “Everyone Matters.” This project will help with boosting student morale and achievement in the classroom.
The SCHS football team will begin play in a scrimmage game at Effingham County on Aug. 14. The regular-season opener will be the next week against St. Johns High School, S.C., on Aug. 21.
The SCHS Lady Gamecock softball team will be in action on the road starting on Aug. 10. The girls will play Southeast Bulloch, South Effingham, Vidalia, Effingham County, and Burke County before their home game against Burke on Aug. 22.
