SCES amends its tardiness policy

Last year changes were made to reduce the number of parents walking their children to classrooms in the morning at Screven County Elementary School.
When the 2015-2016 school year begins on Aug. 3, another policy change will occur and it does involve walking.
If an elementary school student arrives after 8:05 a.m. on a school day, then the parent or guardian must walk into the school and check that student in for the day.
SCES principal Brett Warren said the few minutes after 8 a.m. will allow those students close to making it to school before the tardy bell to go to class. However, when it becomes 8:05 a.m., Warren said students coming into the classroom late is disruptive.
He said the teachers have to redo their attendance roll and complete other morning duties.
For the 2014-2015 school year, Warren, after speaking with elementary school teachers, parents were not allowed to walk their children to the classroooms in the morning after 7:50 a.m.
Another change for this upcoming school year is SCES will not be accepting requests for students’ classroom assignments.
Warren said students were ranked by a number system based on demographics and slotted into teachers’ classrooms.
Warren said more than 200 requests were made last year for students to be in a certain or a choice of teachers’ classrooms.
