School ‘daze’ nears

It may be hard to believe for some -- especially the students -- but the beginning of a new school year is only a dozen days away.
The first day of school for children will be Monday, Aug. 4, in Screven County.
However, before those pupils sit in their desk for the 2014-2015, multiple get-ready types of events are on the schedule.
The official Screven County systemwide Open House for the elementary, middle and high schools will be Friday, Aug. 1, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On that same day, the Back To School Picnic Giveaway for students in kindergarten through eighth grade will be in the Family Life Center of the Sylvania First Baptist Church from 10 a.m. to noon. The annual event is sponsored by the Masters Club and Screven County Community Collaborative.
Before the day of the open house, there will be orientation sessions at the three schools for specific grades.
A PreK drop-in orientation will be at the elementary school July 31 from 4 to 6 p.m.
A sixth grade orientation will be at the middle school from 5 to 6:30 p.m. July 31 and a ninth grade orientation will be at the high school from 6 to 7:30 p.m. July 31.
On Aug. 3 at 2:30 p.m., a Prayer Walk will be held starting at the county courthouse. People then will be allowed to go to the individual schools to pray for the students and staff.
Within this week’s edition of the Sylvania Telephone are the school supply lists for the students, plus additional parts of information.
Next week the Telephone will publish the school bus schedules.
