Major accomplishment

Experience helps.
Rising Screven County High School senior Darius Williams returns this year as the Gamecock Marching Band’s drum major.
With this honor before the 2013-2014 school year, Williams attended the University of Georgia Summer Marching Band Camp. He learned and honed his skills as a leader.
This year from June 8-12 Williams excelled even more at the UGA camp to claim the “Roger L. Dancz Young Conductor Award” as the top high school drum major to attend the camp out of more than 100.
Along with this prestigious award, Williams will have the opportunity to lead the renown UGA Redcoat Marching Band in a pregame musical piece at one of the Bulldogs’ 2014 home football games.
“I was very surprised to receive the award,” said Williams, who said he wanted to help the camp be a better experience for everyone there.
As if earning the honor was not enough, Williams did so where he wants to attend college. Williams plans to go to UGA to major in music education and minor in music performance.
While in college, he aspires to be a Redcoat band member and hopefully also a collegiate drum major.
“I am very proud of him,” said SCHS director of bands Justin Burke. “I am excited to hear they gave him this honor and I am looking forward to seeing him implement all the things he has learned.”
Williams said he wanted to thank the band boosters for helping pay for his trip to the UGA camp. “I am very grateful to them,” he said.
