County school budget shows increase

The Screven County School System budget for the 2014-2015 has a $644,000 increase in expenditures, however no tax hike will be necessary to handle the extra charges.
A majority of the expense changes can be seen in instruction throughout the school district. Instruction includes activities that deal directly with the interaction between teachers and students. Included in instruction are the salaries and operational costs of teachers and paraprofessionals funded with state and Quality Basic Education funds.
An increase was visible in special education, gifted, kindergarten/early intervention, grades 1-3, grades 4-5/early intervention, grades 6-8, and grades 9-12.
The original 2013-2014 general fund budget was $19.109 million, while the proposed FY2015 is $19.753 million.
This 3.37 percent increase is a $644,162 difference.
This tentative budget was approved at the June 9 school board meeting. The adoption of this budget is scheduled for July 14 in the central office boardroom at 5 p.m.
