‘Old Glory’ retirement, ‘Congress on Corner,’ identification kits & music festival Saturday

Multiple events are scheduled before noon Saturday and a music festival also is planned to be an all-day affair.
The Veterans of Foreign Wars  Post 7116 and the Brier Creek Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution will host an American Flag Retirement Ceremony June 14 for Flag Day.
The event will start at 10 a.m. behind the Sylvania Fire Department and Police Department.
The ceremony is open to the public and the community is urged to drop off any unserviceable flags at the city fire department or in one of the retired flag boxes located at county fire stations or the VFW location on Community Drive.
The flag boxes were constructed by high school student Aaron West for his Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout project.
Old, torn, weathered, faded, and tattered flags will be deposed of June 14 by burning along with the others.
U.S. Rep. John Barrow, who represents District 12 which includes Screven County, will conduct a “Congress on the Corner” from 10 to 11 a.m. at R&D’s Seafood Steaks and More at 1176 Burton’s Ferry Highway in Sylvania.
Individuals are encouraged to come meet Barrow, discuss the activity in Washington, D.C., and receive help with questions or concerns.
Boy Scout Troop 103 will be at the county library on Community Drive to do Child Identification Kits to help parents in case their children go missing. Children will get their fingerprints and photographs taken, and the kits will be given to the parents in case they’re needed to help find or identify their child.
Also on Saturday Cail Field and Cail Community Center will be the locations for an all-day Sylvania Grand Festival.
The first show will be 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Cail Field as rhythm and blues plus beach music from the 1950s through the 1980s will be the music. There will be free barbecue off the grill as long as it lasts. The group Variations will be on stage to perform the beach music.
The second show will be inside the Cail Community Center as the gospel music will begin at 5 p.m. Groups like the New Life Gospel Singers, The Roberts Sisters, Frank Williams, Tyrone & The Gospel Star Lites are scheduled to perform.
The music festival is sponsored in part by Concrete Finishing Inc. and Mickey’s Cleaning Service.
