Special Olympics times 2

Two special days are on the schedule for some very special people.
This Saturday, May 3, the Lost Creek Equine Center LLC will host a state-sanctioned event for special needs youth from around Georgia. On Friday, May 9, the local annual Special Olympics event for students in the school system and some adults will be at the county’s recreation department.
Both events are free and open to the public.
In case of inclement weather, the Saturday event will be moved to the following day of May 4. The horse-riding center is located at 1251 Airport Road, near the Sylvania-Screven County Airpark, off of Highway 21.
The center’s event is the Special Olympics Georgia Invitational for the participants to earn points toward state totals. However, spectators will be able to interact with trainers and horses and several festivities will be available for children.
Equine center owner Debbie Bergeron said there will have an area for face painting, games and crafts. There also will be a silent auction, food and entertainment.
Bergeron said anyone wanting to know more about special needs and facilities available in the area come out and meet with the instructors, watch their students, and gather information.
“We are proud to be hosting this event, and hope to make it an annual thing,” she said. “We are goin to make it fun. For me to personally have it here, I am in awe.”

The local annual Screven County Special Olympics will be May 9 at the Screven County Recreation Department.
The opening ceremony will be at 9:30 a.m. and the games will conclude at approximately 11:30 a.m.
The organizers said the 2013 games were successful because of assistance from community sponsors. Individuals and groups over the years have assisted financially and as volunteers. The United Way of Screven County also has helped with the Special Olympics.
The community is invited to come take part in the games, said the Special Olympics Management Team of Rondee Ondriezek and Tammy Brannen.
Those who would like to assist, may contact the high school at 451-2300; email; or fax to 451-2301. The mailing address is Screven County High School, 226 Halcyondale Road, Sylvania, GA 30467, ATTN: Rondee Ondriezek or Tammy Brannen.
