Sample some of Sylvania's superlatives

Expect tons of fun at the Sylvania Sampler on Saturday.

The Junior Woman’s Club is sponsoring the festivities that are scheduled on the courthouse grounds, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They will include crafts, food booths, live music and a dog show. Next door at the amphitheater, the chamber is sponsoring a car and truck show.

Organizers expect more than 1,000 people to attend the event, which is in its 29th year.

“We want everyone to come out and have a great time,” said Kathryn Youles, president of the Junior Woman’s Club. “We have so much going on that there will be something for everyone.”

The garden club will have a flower display and winners of the photo contest will be displayed. Miss Sampler, Kayla Doyle, will welcome everyone, along with city and county officials.

Food will include Caribbean food, barbecue, hot dogs and funnel cakes. Local bands will play and there will be inflatable play structures for children.

At least 60 booths are planned, including ones offering temporary airbrush tattoos, hand-crafted clay pots, plants, leather goods, cookbooks, kitchen products, fire safety information, candles, jewelry, purses, child ID kits and wood crafts.

Events will include a hula hoop contest and a cake walk – a musical chairs game with a cake for a prize.

Admission to the auto and truck show will be $3, with children under age 12 getting in for free. The show is sponsored by the Screven County Chamber of Commerce, Sylvania’s Better Hometown and the Southern Cruisers. Registration will be from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with judging from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and door prizes from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. For more information about the car show, call the chamber at (912) 564-7878.

The dog show will be held at 11 a.m. on the courthouse lawn. It will cost $5 to enter, with proceeds going to Friends of Screven County Animals. Categories will include best dressed, most unusual costume, favorite school colors, most original T-shirt and shelter dog strut. All dogs must have current vaccinations to participate in the show. For registration forms and more information, go to the “events” section of the Friends’ Web site, at: www.friendsofscrevencountyanimals.org.

One of the booths will feature author Eva Marie Everson, a Sylvania native who will be selling and signing copies of her latest novel, “Things Left Unspoken.” The Christian author also is a speaker at women’s retreats and writer’s seminars.

Local author Elizabeth Anne Ryan Janney will be taking orders for the third book in her Endless Love series, “Forever in His Heart,” which will be released in November.  She also will be autographing her first two books. She writes Christian romances that bring awareness to donating blood and bone marrow.

The 5K “Chicken Run” that had been planned for Saturday has been canceled. The Lady Gamecocks’ cross-country team at Screven County High School has decided not to hold the race.
