Pop's Kitchen waitress earns $100 tip

Fifteen dogs and five cats were adopted from Screven County’s animal shelter last week – an all-time high.
The newly formed Friends of Screven County Animals has been advertising animals at the shelter on its Web site – www.friendsofscrevencountyanimals.org -- in mass e-mails and on Craig’s List in Waynesboro, Augusta and Savannah.
“People from outside the community are realizing there are a lot of neat animals,” said Friends Vice President Lisa Guidos. Some of the animals adopted last week went to people who were taking them to New Hampshire and North Carolina, she said.
County records indicate that in all of 2008, 29 dogs and cats were adopted from the shelter; 14 were reclaimed by their owners and the rest of the 1,500 animals that went through the facility were euthanized. The records show that in 2007, 79 animals were adopted; nine were reclaimed and the rest euthanized.
So far in 2009, 56 animals have been adopted from the shelter, with 35 of those in July alone, according to county records.
“I’m just very, very impressed with the number of adoptions from the shelter,” in July, said Darryl DeGroat, president of Friends. “We’re real pleased.”
The group will collect donations from motorists in downtown Sylvania from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday. A dozen volunteers will collect donations in the “change for a change” fundraiser.
The next Friends meeting is set for 7 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 31, at the Cail Community Center.
Meanwhile, the county’s only veterinarian, Dr. Pat Dyar, said he has special prices to spay or neuter animals that are adopted from the Screven County animal shelter: male cat $50; female cat, $60; male dog, $65; and female dog, $75. Customers must bring paperwork from the county showing when the animal was adopted.
Those are the same rates charged by the Spay/Neuter Alliance and Clinic in nearby Ridgeland, S.C. The rates at the non-profit clinic are the same for all animals -- whether or not they came from a shelter. For more information about their services, go to www.snac1.com, or call (843) 645-2500.
