Serving up good food & Southern hospitality

People in the South are gracious.

That hospitality has become quite common knowledge, but a visiting baseball team, its coaches and supporters now have an even better understanding what “Southern Hospitality” really is.

Brown’s Country Kitchen, a landmark of good food on Highway 21, fed the 7 and 8-year-old players for Cochran-BleckleyCounty and all of those who had traveled with the boys to ScrevenCounty for the state tournament July 9.

That was 60 people total.

Now comes the hospitality kicker: Brown’s fed them for free.

Why would a restaurant do that?

Nutty Holtzclaw, or “Mrs. Nutty,” as most know her had a simple answer: “We just like doing that for people.”

Holtzclaw said she recently had spoken to some Hilton Head, S.C., residents who mentioned the BleckleyCounty team would be in town for the July 9-11 state tournament at the Screven County Recreation Department complex.

So Holtzclaw told them to encourage their friends to pay a visit to the family-run Brown’s Country Kitchen. But there was no paying involved for the plates of meats, vegetables and desserts.

“Just bring all of them,” Holtzclaw remembers saying to the Hilton Head group.

“They were very, very nice,” Holtzclaw said of the young boys and their coaches and parents. “We had so much fun and the coach even came back on Friday. We had a good time.”

Speaking for the players, parents and fellow coaches Cochran coach Shane Stokes said Brown’s Country Kitchen offered a “helping hand to us.”

restaurant to them saying that Holtzclaw said “If you bring them, we will feed them.”

“Southern hospitality is definitely from the south, but that is over and above that,” Stokes said. “I just wanted everybody in the local community to know what they did for us.”

He said to feed just the team is one thing but to feed the team, coaches, parents and other supporters is phenomenal.

“I am at a loss for words,” said Stokes, who, with others, pooled the group to at least give the restaurant a donation for its generosity. “We even got a collection together for tip money, but she wouldn’t even take it.”

Holtzclaw told them to use that money on the players.

“From now on, when I am going to Savannah, I am going to make sure I take 301 to 21 and stop by Brown’s Country Kitchen,” Stokes said.
