Son fatally wounds father with shotgun

An argument over the custody of children escalated into gunfire May 21 when a son fatally wounded his father with a shotgun.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigations have charged Allen Freddie-Lee Rachels, 25, of 2016 Hiltonia-Perkins Road with murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.
Rachels’ 43-year-old father Jonie Allen Rachels, 43, resided at the same address
“The argument was about the custody of children and words lead to the shooting,” said Screven County Sheriff Mike Kile.
The son fired a shot of a 12-gauge shotgun at his father, Kile said.
The sheriff said the perpritator told law enforcement that he felt threatened and he defended himself.
The deceased was not in possession of a weapon, Kile said.
Kile said the younger Rachels admitted to the 6:55 p.m. shooting.
“He flagged down two citizens to tell them what he had done,” Kile said.
Georgia State Patrol, Screven County Sheriff’s Office deputies, GBI and Sylvania Police Chief Gary Weaver responded to the emergency call.
Funeral services for Rachels were Tuesday.
The elder Rachels was listed as a registered sex offender. He had been convicted of child molestation in October 1991. The deceased also had been arrested for multiple traffic offenses over the years in Screven County.
